Four pianists and eight hands are summoned here for a program that starts with the most irreverent tone poem ever written, Richard Strauss’s Till Eulenspiegel, in which the main character makes fun of everything, even Death itself. It then continues with folk dances, danced dances, imaginary dances, and choreographic dances, all very well-known creations by Dvořák, Saint-Saëns, Ravel, and Stravinsky. Death peeps out again in the Danse macabre and then — in a much more elusive way — in Ravel’s work. However, everything luckily ends up in rebirth with the Firebird.
