These are two of Rachmaninov’s major piano works, dating from two different periods of his life and opus. The Variations are based on the same theme, not “by” Corelli, but used “by” Corelli in his Follia violin sonata. They were composed in 1931, at the beginning of Rachmaninov’s Swiss period. The Études-Tableaux are two series of piano works of high virtuosic commitment and symphonic breadth. They were written in 1916 when the composer was still living in Russia. The second series is presented here.
