Originally from Feuchtwangen, Bavaria, soprano Christiane Karg studied at the Mozarteum University in Salzburg with Heiner Hopfner and in Wolfgang Holzmair’s Lied class, earning the Lilli Lehmann medal for her master’s degree in opera and musical theatre. Having made her debut at the Salzburg Festival before completing her studies, she has been a regular guest at the event ever since.
As an interpreter of some of the most celebrated roles in the repertoire, she continues to appear on the world’s most important stages: in London at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden and the Opéra National de Paris as Pamina, at the Lyric Opera of Chicago and the Met in New York as Susanna, at La Scala in Milan as Sophie and Euridice, at the Vienna State Opera as Mélisande, at the Hamburg State Opera as Pamina, Mélisande, Daphne and Countess, at the Staatsoper Unter den Linden as Micaëla and recently as Rusalka, at the Bayerische Staatsoper as Pamina, Blanche (Dialogues des Carmélites) and Fiordiligi. In addition, as Artist in Residence at the Musikverein in Graz, Christiane Karg performed for the first time in the role of Rosalinde in a concert performance of Johann Strauss’s Die Fledermaus.
The soprano is also one of the most sought-after performers on the international concert scene. She has collaborated with conductors such as Daniel Barenboim, Christian Thielemann, Riccardo Muti, Zubin Mehta, Yannick Nézet-Séguin, Daniel Harding, Christoph Eschenbach, Andrés Orozco-Estrada, Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Mariss Jansons, Semyon Bychkov, Herbert Blomstedt and Iván Fischer.
Lieder recitals hold a particularly special place in the artist’s heart. She is a regular guest at the Musikverein and Konzerthaus in Vienna, the Wigmore Hall in London, the Boulez Saal in Berlin, the Schubertiade in Schwarzenberg and Hohenems, the Salzburg Festival and the Mozartwoche.
In autumn 2020, Christiane Karg released her critically acclaimed album Erinnerung with Gustav Mahler’s Lieder on the Harmonia Mundi label. His recordings of Le Nozze di Figaro conducted by Y. Nézet-Séguin, the CD Scene! with the Arcangelo Baroque Orchestra under the direction of Jonathan Cohen and his album of Lieder Verwandlung – Lieder eines Jahres (with pianist Burkhard Kehring) have received numerous awards.
