Biography

At the age of 28, Kazakh bass Mark Kurmanbayev has already appeared in leading European venues including the Bayerische Staatsoper Munich, Teatro di San Carlo Naples, Grand Théâtre de Genève, Dutch National Opera Amsterdam, Berlin Philharmonie and Festspielhaus Baden-Baden.

He has collaborated with distinguished conductors such as Sir Mark Elder, Kirill Petrenko, Enrique Mazzola, Antonino Fogliani and Giampaolo Bisanti.

Kurmanbayev was a soloist of the Grand Théâtre de Genève, where he performed roles including Bonzo (Madama Butterfly), Haly (L’italiana in Algeri), Biterolf (Tannhäuser) and Publio (La clemenza di Tito). Earlier, he was a member of the Dutch National Opera Studio in Amsterdam, gaining important early professional experience.

He has appeared at major festivals such as the Festival d’Aix-en-Provence, Verbier Festival, Gstaad New Year Music Festival and Crans-Montana Classics Festival.

In 2025, he was a finalist at the International Hans Gabor Belvedere Singing Competition, becoming one of the first singers from Kazakhstan to reach the final stage.

Upcoming engagements include his role debut as Prince Gremin (Eugene Onegin) at The Grange Festival, and as Assur(Semiramide) at the Rossini in Wildbad Festival.

From the 2027/28 season, he will join the ensemble of the Deutsche Oper Berlin, with role debuts including Basilio (Il barbiere di Siviglia), Colline (La bohème) and Frate (Don Carlo).
