A solo cello recital must inevitably focus on Bach’s suites, which remain the cornerstone of the instrument’s repertoire. In this case, however, the third and fourth suites are framed by a much lesser-known work, the Sonata for Cello composed by György Ligeti when he was not yet a champion of the most challenging avant-garde music, but rather a young Hungarian, fresh from his studies and deeply in love with the music of Bartók and Kodály.
