In the year of the 250th anniversary of Beethoven’s birth, Louis Lortie pays tribute to the composer from Bonn with a recital that brings together three seemingly distant works from Beethoven’s 32 Sonatas, yet all united by an intense lyricism: Sonata No. 4, dedicated to his master Haydn, Sonata No. 14, which lends its name to the evening thanks to its famous apocryphal title “Moonlight Sonata”, and Sonata No. 30, shining in its radiant E major, part of the sublime triptych of Beethoven’s final Sonatas.
For Beethoven, the piano was a testing ground for experimenting with new expressive forms and shaping musical structure to suit his poetic vision. This concert will guide the audience through a progressive understanding of the transformation of classical sonata form, breaking traditional rules in favor of a freer musical expression that foreshadows Romanticism.
