The 150th anniversary of Ravel’s birth is being celebrated and LacMus chose to offer an extensive selection of his music, starting from his piano œuvre. The first part of this program has Ravel glancing backward to the past. The celebrated Pavane pour une infante défunte and three more old-style pieces prepare the listeners for the monumental Tombeau de Couperin, the ultimate synthesis of his harmonic modernity and love for 18th-century French harpsichord masters. In a parallel fashion, the second part displays Ravel, the visionary, looking ahead to a future in which form dissolves into pure color. First comes the youthful, evocative Jeux d’eau, then the disturbing, dream-like images of Gaspard de la nuit.
