Introduction

This program of chamber vocal music brings together composers who were close in time yet distant in space and spirit. Like a synchronic snapshot of the Belle Époque, it allows us to hear, side by side, the romances and Lieder that flourished in Italy and Germany, France and Austria during that era, each with its contrasting colors and flavors—from the last sighs of the fading Austro-Hungarian world to the bold seductions of the Parisian music hall, with Afro-American syncopations already knocking at the door.
