Four pianists and eight hands come together in a program that begins with the most irreverent symphonic poem ever written, Till Eulenspiegel by Richard Strauss, whose protagonist even mocks Death itself. The journey continues with folk dances, danced dances, imaginary dances, and choreographed dances—well-known works by Dvořák, Saint-Saëns, Ravel, and Stravinsky. Death makes another appearance in the Danse macabre and then—much more elusively—in Ravel’s piece. In any case, everything culminates in a happy ending of rebirth with The Firebird.
