Greenway del Lago di Como

Sunday July 14th, 2024 at 05:30 PM

Every year, our Musical Greenway is a journey through sundry fascinating places and equally sundry musical styles. It begins and ends at St. Eufemia’s, where we are welcomed by late-Romantic organ sounds, now massive, now piercing, merged with a soprano voice, in transcriptions from Liszt, Wolf, Reger, Fauré, and Nadia Boulanger. Then we move to the square to encounter a cheerful woodwind quintet, in equally cheerful transcriptions from Stravinsky and Offenbach, and then Debussy’s transparent and mysterious Rhapsodie for clarinet. From this point on, the journey goes all the way back: the woodwind quintet reappears on the monastery stairs, to carry us away into the brilliant moods of transcriptions from Ravel and Gustav Holst; and finally, we are back to St. Eufemia’s, where the soprano and organ program is completed.
