The title of this concert is a promise of violin fireworks—which is kept. We shall listen to two of the great Genoese’s most famous acrobatic pieces, La Campanella and I Palpiti, separated by Eugène Ysaÿe’s little-known bravura violin piece, built on a previous bravura piano piece by Saint-Saëns. However, the proceedings are opened by a composition displaying opposite qualities, Fauré’s Sonata, Op. 13, which has little that is virtuosic, except perhaps in that sparkling third movement, but is chock-full of brilliant melodic ideas.
